Helping Hand

December 21, 2009
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) raised the alert status of Mayon Volcano from ALERT LEVEL 3 to ALERT LEVEL 4 2:30 PM yesterday, December 20th. ALERT LEVEL 4 means that hazardous explosive eruption is possible within days. Sulfur Dioxide (SO 2) emission rate remained very high at 6,089 tonnes per day. Audible booming and rumbling sound occasionally occurred. Intensified crater glow and rolling down of incandescent lava fragment from crater is persistent. Red hot lava flow continuously flow down the Bonga-Buyuan, Miisi and Lidong gullies. Lava fountains rising approximately 200 meter above the crater were observed. Lava front has now reached about 5 kilometers downslope from the crater along the Bonga-Buyuan gullies.
The extended danger zone (EDZ) from the summit of 8 kilometers on the southern sector of the volcano and the 7 kilometers on the northern sector is off-limit to human activity. A 24-hour curfew is now enforced in these areas to prevent residents from returning to their communities.
Total number of evacuees now reached 9,880 families or 47,137 individuals as of 4:00 PM, December 23, 2009 from 32 barangays/villages. The evacuees are now temporarily sheltered in 27 evacuation centers. More communities will be affected and more evacuees will troop to the evacuations centers should Mayon Volcano’s abnormal activities intensify further and alert level is raised to the maximum, which is Alert Level 5.
Should Alert level 5 is raised it is calculated that the evacuees will have to stay in the evacuation centers for 47 t0 87 days. More provisions would be needed.
